Tacos in Toronto: The Best Taquerias North of the Border
Toronto is quite far from Mexico, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t home to some top-notch tacos. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional Tijuana-style street fare or something more daring, there’s a spot in the city to get your fix.
Grand Electric
This Queen Street staple has long boasted a menu of family-style Mexican food, including a selection of tacos for people of all culinary preferences. Our personal favorites at Grand Electric are the Baja fish and shrimp tacos, but you could choose while wearing a blindfold and still come out with something delicious.
Seven Lives
For a more experimental spin on a street-food staple, check out Seven Lives in Kensington Market. This cash-only spot serves left-field tacos like smoked marlin and octopus alongside our usual faves like carnitas and mahi mahi. Their portions are enormous, so make sure you bring a growling appetite!
La Carnita
With locations all around Toronto, you’re probably not too far from La Carnita. They are a no-frills taqueria that puts all their attention into their food – we like to ask about the house special whenever we visit, just to keep something new in the rotation at all times.
Mad Mexican
Taco connoisseurs (“taconnoisseurs?”) know they are always served best in trios, so the Mad Mexican gives you a price break at increments of three. You can’t go wrong with any of their selections, but make sure you get a hefty helping of their guacamole – hands down, the best we’ve had in town!
Banh Mi Boys
Even though it’s a Vietnamese restaurant, Banh Mi’s kalbi beef, squid, and tofu tacos are worthy of mention alongside the rest of Toronto’s best. And if we can be totally honest here: A bao looks a lot like a taco inside of a pillowy soft steamed bun.
